One of my goals for 2014 is to be even more frugal than I already am. I feel like I am pretty frugal but around the holidays I get a little off track. We ate dinner out too much, I made too many trips to the store which lead to impulsive buying and I stopped planning weekly shopping trips. I have found that by taking into account the fruits and vegetables that are in season and planning meals around them I often save a bit of money. Right now broccoli is in season and it is a family favorite!
- broccoli
- cabbage
- carrots
- cauliflower
- celery
- chard
- collards
- kale
- spinach
Fruits in season:
- avocado
- grapefruit
- mandarins
- navel oranges
- tangerines
- kiwi
- pears
- pomegranates
Are you wondering how you can use these in-season fruits and veggies? Here are a few recipes that incorporate one or more of them! Cheddar Broccoli soup uses broccoli and carrots –
Chicken noodle soup uses carrots and celery-
Five Star Chicken Alfredo uses broccoli –
Chicken Pot Pie uses carrots and celery-
Veggie pizza uses broccoli, cauliflower and carrots –
Cabbage casserole–
Broccoli slaw–
Grapefruit Juice–

Yum! These meals sound delicious, especially that chicken noodle soup. It's so different living in WI in the winter as opposed to CA, the selection of fruits and veggies this time of year (and price) might be the one thing I really miss.
