How To – Make a Framed Magnetic Board

What a crazy month May was. I known I have been slacking on my Theme of the Week posts, but June proves to be slowing back down.

Today I am going to show you how to make a magnetic board.

What you will need –

  • A frame (I got mine from the Salvation Army for $1.50 each)
  • A sheet of metal
  • Metal cutters (if your metal size doesn’t match your frame size)
  • Fabric
  • Hot glue
  • Spray Paint

I purchased my frame from the Salvation Army and spray painted it black. I purchased my metal from Lowe’s and they have all sorts of sizes. I was making two so I bought a piece big enough for both of my frames and borrowed my dad’s metal cutters. (Use gloves as the metal is sharp on the edges!)

Make sure when you cut your fabric you have about an inch on each side to wrap it around the metal. For instance if your frame is 10×8 then your fabric should be 12×10.

(This is a view of the back) Depending on your print you want to make sure everything is lined up so that when you wrap the fabric around the metal it doesn’t look crooked. (I learned this from experience as you’ll see in my final picture) Then put a line of hot glue along one side of the metal and wrap the side up. Then do the opposite side. With the other two sides I glued the corners first and then the middle. Make sure to pull tight so that the fabric isn’t loose when your done.
Then I hot glued the finished metal piece into the frame. Making a framed magnetic board is as easy as that!

Well I’m off to spend time with my boys before it rains –AGAIN- and take pictures of my craft room. It is halfway done and I will show you my progress tomorrow!
